Backtagging: Yes.
Threadhopping: Yes.
Fourthwalling: No.
Other: I'm pretty laid back and agreeable. You can

Hugging this character: Yes, but Tess is not likely to be agreeable to it.
Kissing this character: Yes, but be aware that Tess will very likely resist and/or aim to wound/kill.
Flirting with this character: Absolutely. Tess might even reciprocate if she thinks it's worth her time. Uninvited touching will get a hostile reaction.
Fighting with this character: Absolutely, but understand that Tess does not spar; she shoots to kill.
Injuring this character: Yes, though to a degree. Please contact me about life-threatening injuries first. Tess is a tough lady and can handle quite a bit of punishment before she goes down, but there's only so many scars one lady can have.
Killing this character: No, sorry. Her CR wouldn't do well with it.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Sure. Please contact for information on what she's currently going through.

Warnings: Tess has a degree of PTSD from struggling to survive in a pandemic-ridden world. She is inclined to react to threats/violence/stressors with violence, and as stated, aims to kill. While she has little incentive to kill in most RP settings, she will not hesitate to do it if she deems it important for her own protection/survival. Men who could physically overpower her are given absolutely no quarter when Tess feels threatened (or that her loved ones are being threatened.)

She also reacts negatively (though not necessarily violently) to people running behind/around her or screaming unnecessarily, even if in play. She is not comfortable sleeping in public or around strangers and will react negatively to being forcibly woken. She will react adversely to people entering her apartment without her knowledge or permission.

Tess carries a concealed gun and a knife at all times.

Tess’ newfound power is pathfinding –– Tess has the ability to locate objects or people simply by touching objects or people who have interacted with them recently, as if tapping into that object or person's past and present.

She sees the present location of that object or person only in a general sense; she has to use context clues to deduce where the item might actually be. For example, she might touch a person's ring finger to find a lost ring, and then "see" that lost ring caught in a drain trap. Knowing that person washed the dishes shortly before losing it, she might deduce it's the kitchen sink's drain. Similarly, she might touch a spent bullet shell and "see" that it was fired by a man with a baseball cap, but if it was dark out at the time of firing, she might not be able to see his face.

Pathfinding also requires skin-to-skin or skin-to-surface contact, which is to say it can be neutralized with gloves.

As she adjusts and practices to make this power voluntary rather than being bombarded with objects and peoples' histories just by touching them, she will be able to use it deliberately against people.

For that reason, we have permissions. :')

Tess looks plenty delighted as she unloads a massive armload of shopping bags onto the bed. She even has to take a moment to unstring bags hanging from her arms just to put them down, and there are little red marks on her skin from the sheer weight of them. Joel looks a little unimpressed, but she pays him no heed at all –– as if he didn't take advantage at first, too.

And she keeps rambling... )

"Tess." And then, louder: "TESS."

Tess looks over the top rim of her sunglasses to Ellie, who is paddling around the pool with her arms, belly-down on a pool mattress that is ever-so-slightly too narrow for her. Message received, she wants to say, but she doesn't. Instead she just turns her eyes back to her book.

"Hm?" she says.

"What's grey and can't fly?" Ellie asks.

It's one of those jokes, Tess knows, and she tries to find whatever line she left off at in her book. Something something everything went dark.

"An elephant," she offers.

"No," Ellie replies. "A parking lot!"

Tess looks up again, if only so Ellie can see her beleaguered expression, and Ellie gives a snort of a laugh and starts paddling towards the edge closest to Tess's deck chair.

"These your new favourite jokes, huh," Tess says, dryly. "And I'm going to hear them all."

"They're good!" Ellie says. "What's green and looks like a bucket?"

"A green bucket," Tess says, dubiously.

Ellie just laughs in response, long and carefree, maybe a little obnoxiously. Tess wished she'd had that kind of imperviousness to other people's opinions when she was a teenager, to be fifteen and laugh at those stupid kinds of jokes. She'd been too cool for them before she'd even gotten to high school. She would have been worried about showing off crooked teeth or looking childish or something.

Tess turns a page back in her book. She might as well reread the last few paragraphs, given how much of it she'd failed to absorb. She thinks of a joke like that she'd heard eons ago, too, maybe from her brother or her father or something while trapped in the car on a road trip. The one to Washington, she recalled. They'd been driving for hours.

"Hey," Tess says. "What's red and bad for your teeth?"

Ellie turns big green eyes her direction, wide like saucers and full of some sort of unmitigated glee. "Holy shit," she says, and she pushes herself to sit up on the mattress, forcing it underwater between her legs with the ends bent up. She rests her hands on the front end like she's riding a hobby horse. "Oh man, what's the answer?"

Tess smiles, almost involuntarily, a purse of her lips that doesn't want to admit the kid is growing on her.

"A brick," she says.

Ellie promptly loses it, laughing so hard she tips over the mattress.

In which there is pegging and I make no effort to edit because I don't care if I'm posting subpar work. Old people sex, but I don't know what else you could be expecting.

Also, sadness?????????????????????????? idk like 2600 words of sad porn.

Their king-size bed is perhaps Tess's favourite piece of furniture, and she's sure that if she asked Joel, he would say the same. It's the only bed that could ever work for them, too, given that it is wide enough that on their separate sides, the gulf between them almost simulates they space they've normally kept through separate bedrooms, through separate apartments.

In their earlier years they had shared a double bed for a long time, at least until Tess had moved out. There had been a few weeks somewhere in there where they'd slept on a twin, too, when they were first looking for their apartment together after Tess was evicted from military family housing. Those nights had been sticky-sweet, the kind of summer that demanded air conditioning their electricity rationing couldn't provide, and yet they'd endured.

Things had been different back then. Back then, nothing could have scared them off each other. )

In the running for worst, laziest ficlet I've ever written.

He's been sitting on something all night. Tess can't put her finger on it, and even when she probes, he doesn't give anything up. All in all, it's a nice date night for them both, and it's midnight by time they get back up to their room and right into bed. Even when he's troubled, Joel knows how to take care of her.

Tess feels Joel's fingers splay against her bare stomach... )

Joel is warm to the touch, and evidently pleased to be so.

Tess sits on the side of the tub, with Joel sitting almost between her knees. He's quiet, chest-deep in hot bath water, and she washes his hair gently. Her fingers run back and forth, massaging his scalp and careful to keep the soap from migrating down into his eyes, and Joel lets out a comfortable sigh as she works out all the tension built up over the past week.

"I didn't imagine something like this could feel so good," he says, and Tess laughs. Genuinely laughs.

''Well, you didn't have the chance to try, did you?'' )

Sixteen-year-old Tess experiments with running away by heading to D.C. to visit her cousin Renee. Life is so hard, being a teenager.

Also TLOU/24 mashup/crossover yahhhhhhh fight me I do what I want etc, 4400 words ew

Tess cradles the phone against her ear for a long moment, silent, suddenly unsure of where to start. Should she delay the reason she called for small talk, or jump right into it? Should she let out all her righteous anger or cast herself as the victim? Tess thought she had her mind made up when she dialed, but faced with that "Hello?" she's questioning everything.

''Hello...?'' )

Tess knows Joel is nervous; even if he tries to hide it, she can see the tension in his jaw and the set of his shoulders. Reading him gets easier and easier every day.

"You okay?" she asks him as she is waved by security, and Joel doesn't meet her eyes. He casts the soldier at the check-point a glance and then averts his eyes, shoving his passport back into his pocket.

"I'm fine," he mumbles.

"Well, look alive, my brother eats shy guys for dinner."

Joel's expression shifts from discomfort to confusion. )

"Introduce me to your partner," Tess says.

Tess sees Jesse's response coming, and it all plays out as she expects: Jesse resists at first, but he eventually comes to see it her way, especially with Joel on her side. They both want to meet this mysterious partner, and Jesse knows they'll just introduce themselves if he doesn't. He stalls anyway: Mr. White is busy. Mr. White is still settling in and Jesse doesn't want Joel and Tess to scare him. Mr. White is still getting used to things. It hardly delays them –– even when Jesse warns them that it's not going to be a happy-nice-fun meeting, Tess isn't even remotely deterred.

In no time, Tess is heading upstairs... )

Can I even call this one a ficlet at 4500 words? No?

It's a few hours after their biggest haul yet and they're dancing to celebrate.

Tess lets out a squeal of laughter when Joel unexpectedly dips her. Her head falls back, her hair fans out, and he tilts her so far that she lifts one leg to keep her balance. His arm is strong around her waist, and his fingers are entwined with hers.

''Don't drop me,'' she says. )

"Are we seriously doing this?"

The question prompts Tess to glance over with an unimpressed look. Joel just stares back at her, almost incredulous.

"Yes," Tess says, resolute. "It's all rightfully mine anyway."

After all, she was the one who had made the deals, done the paperwork and arranged for it to be delivered. By all rights, anything she had given to the Fireflies could leave with her, too.

''You sure they won't suspect it's you?'' )

Tess hates winter.

She honestly, truly does. Growing up with snowy winters could never prepare her for the yearly onslaught of blustering wind and endless chill and the strain of her muscles tensing up against the fucking cold. This is her fortieth winter and she still greets it like every other one before it: dreading, moaning, and griping, fuck winter.

Joel heaves an almost annoyed sigh... )

"Are you hoping that if you hang out long enough, you'll get a handout?"

Tess says it lightly enough, but there's still an edge to her voice. Joel looks over at her, but his eyes are still far-away, as if lost in thought.

"No," he says, "I just want to make sure my brother's being taken care of, that's all."

Tess touches the ball of her pen to paper... )

Tess decides to go for it.

"We should go catch a movie sometime," she says, coy and playful. He doesn't even see her smile at first, considering he's busy gazing off into the distance like just being is exhausting, but after a second of silence he turns to her with an almost confused expression. Go catch a movie…?

Tess laughs. )

"Hey," she says, closing the door behind her.

The way she says it, it's almost a command. Something like get over here meets come get me meets you want this. They haven't had adequate time alone to fuck for a week. Tess has no idea how she survived months without it.

Joel knows exactly what she means when she says it, too... )

Tess wakes up to hear someone puking. Given that Joel is on top of her and fast asleep, it could only be Ellie.

"Joel?" she mutters, giving him a bit of a shove. He just gives a sleepy groan in response, shifting so his cheek is laid against her breast. Moving seems impossible; his arm is wrapped possessively around her, his torso half-pinning her to the bed. She shoves him again, just as she hears Ellie retch again. Ugh. "Joel!"

''What?'' )

dog_eat_dog: (if i wasn't there already)
"Gettin' rough today, Tess," Joel growls.

With good reason, too; Tess's kisses are almost aggressive today, riled up and horny as hell, and she keeps nipping his skin between kisses pressed along his neck. He's trying to read the paper in his favourite armchair, and here she is leaning over his chair's back and leaving little red marks on his skin.

''Come on, you like it.'' )

Tess is a thirty-nine year old survivor working as a smuggler in the Boston Quarantine Zone, one of the last remaining military-run refuges in a world ravaged by Cordyceps Brain Infection. Along with her partner Joel, she is enlisted by a group of radicals called the Fireflies to transfer "cargo" –– a little girl named Ellie –– for reasons unknown.

Tess is played by Jenn in [community profile] paradisa. Her sometimes-PB is Annie Wersching, who provided both Tess' voice and likeness in The Last of Us.
