[He doesn't sound angry. He sounds annoyed, but definitely not with Tess, even if it's annoying that she did what she did. He's really just pissed off at Ellie, who is a child, and so he ought to be better than that.]
Showing her who's boss. You know she can't really retaliate, being what she is, bein' who you are. Don't play coy. [The 'warden' just gets an eye-roll she can't see.]
[Tess gives an amused little huff. It drives her a little nuts that he's clever about this shit, but a part of her likes it, too. Keeps her on her toes.]
Yeah? Seems to me she's not really cut out for this job, then, if she's just going to talk a big game and then pass the responsibility to someone else.
You think I'm getting in the way of her trying, like I don't feed her information on inmates every time she talks to one? I just don't want to be chasing around a kid for shit I ought to know just because she's feeling tight-lipped.
[She does resent Ellie, though. She knows that, even if she doesn't want to admit it.]
Shit about Joel? Shit about what happened with the Fireflies? Shit about why she won’t look me in the eyes most of the time but suddenly wants to get lunch? Jesus.
[She figures it’ll take him a bit to find her. Not that she’s hiding — she’s drinking in the hot tub at the pool — but she doesn’t know her warden can track her.]
[Tess is shoulder-deep in the hot tub, just the top few inches of her shoulder scar visible. She relaxes unbothered by the whole evening, a beer bottle in one hand and the other laid against the edge of the tub, but she's sure she's radiating frustration anyway, especially given how fast he found her. When Arthur comes towards her, she reaches behind her to pick up Ellie’s journal off the top of her backpack, and she holds the journal out like she might let him take it.
But if he tries, she'll pull it right back, because she loves getting cute.]
I would've invited you to join me, but I figured it wasn't your thing.
[He hates when she gets cute. Hates it. He really likes her, and this is such a displeasing side of her. He grits his teeth when she pulls the journal back again, and steps up close enough to get splashed.]
Voice
Did you take Ellie's goddamn journal?

When she told me I'd regret it, I didn't think she meant she'd turn around and cry to you.
Re: Voice
Me neither, but she just made it my problem. And you know I had the same problem, and if you tell her I'm going to lose my goddamn mind.

Re: Voice
[He lets out a low, frustrated sigh, running a hand over his face.]
And that ain't what you're doin', I suppose?

Re: Voice
She's a kid. It's damned strange she's here, but she is. Let her try. What've you got to lose, Tess?

Now who's the child, huh? You know how much I hated havin' my things with William, and that wasn't even my journal.

Why would you think I don't like hot baths?
