AUGUST 26th
Tess arrives in Paradisa right out of her last moments: infected with Cordyceps Brain Infection and unwillingly to let it hijack her body, Tess forces Joel to take Ellie and run, leaving her to buy them time by distracting the soldiers hunting them. Paradisa saves her from a death by firing squad, but leaves her with infection. In a pristine, elegant bedroom unlike she's ever seen in person, Tess learns that things here are very, very different, but assumes it will not matter, as she will be dead soon anyway. Before that can happen, however, Ellie finds her, and then Joel. Faced with the man she forced to leave her, Tess reluctantly agrees to ride out her last hours with Joel. It's a rocky time, between Joel's revealed secrets and Tess's rapidly declining emotional state, but they head to the woods to spend their final time together and wait. But it doesn't happen. After heading back to the castle, Joel drifts off and Tess takes things into her own hands again. She finds Lee, another man familiar with infection, and gets the idea that maybe she can change things. She finds Jennifer Keller in the clinic and forces her at gunpoint to debride the infection site, but doesn't finish before Joel can catch up with her. The two manage the situation and leave, entertaining the thought that maybe, just maybe, they've managed to circumvent infection. |
AUGUST 28th
Patched up and hopefully healing, Tess starts meeting people and getting the lay of the land, starting with a young revolutionary with an attitude that nearly drives the two women to blows. Katniss Everdeen takes Tess's harsh words about hero complexes and picks a fight, but both lay down their weapons in favour of conversation. Tess realizes quickly she's dealing with another survivor, even if they don't share the same ideals. Next Tess meets a fellow survivor at the shooting range; Lara Croft is a survivor, too, and like Katniss, fairly young. Satisfied with a source of weaponry and a potential ally, Tess takes particular note of Lara's potential. Feeling more "at home" with a few connections, Tess encounters a little girl with a direwolf and has her first "casual" interaction in the castle. For a rare moment, nothing is business. Tess also gets a taste of just how strange Paradisa can get, outside of time and space anomalies, with a chance encounter with a "dwarf." Who let the Dungeons and Dragons nerds loose? She and Thorin Oakenshield don't hit it off. |
AUGUST 30th
Determined to put down roots and regain control over her environment, Tess sits down with Ellie to reap as much information as she can... both about the castle and what's happened between her and Joel in the year Tess will miss. |
AUGUST 31st
Tess starts laying down connections with fellow infection survivors from Georgia, including a former university professor named Lee and a teenaged boy named Ben who still believes in hope. Tess finds herself willing to work with whatever she's got. |
